This exclusive interview with HRH Ian provides answers and insights to some of the questions regarding Nooqland. Much more than just a vision - with a functioning Government structure, Treasury, passports, and the ONLY country to officially adopt digital currencies like Bitcoin as the nation's currencies.
Q. Why call the country 'Nooqland'?
A. The main obstacle in starting a new nation is the peaceful and inexpensive acquisition of useable land. As such, it’s likely Nooqland will be a relatively small country- a nook (‘nooq’) of land.
Q. What is the vision of Nooqland?
A. Perhaps the nation’s motto – peace, privacy and prosperity – is the best answer to this question. In a bit more detail; I envision a simple, fair, transparent, non-invasive and sustainable lifestyle, with the least possible Government intervention and oversight while still maintaining civil order. I foresee a modern and technologically efficient civilization with a thriving business community and links to local and international trade. Freethinking determination, security, education and healthcare are hugely important and key to making the motto a reality.
Q. What led you to start a country?
A.There are a number of reasons, and while some people have freedom to relocate freely, others cannot do this so readily. Many nations impose strict, and often lengthy and expensive, entry requirements and each country has its problems. Every nation falls short of some basic benchmarks. I have suffered unjust imprisonment, unfounded asset appropriation and lengthy legal proceedings at the hand of the Scottish Government. If this can happen in Scotland, a highly developed nation with a ‘model’ judicial system, perhaps its best just to start again.
Q. Why a Principality, as opposed to a Republic or some other structure?
A. Nooqland has adopted the sovereign monarchical structure of a principality as it is the simplest and most efficient structure for a start-up nation and ensures quick decision making and accountability.
Q. What role, objectives and power do the Government have?
A. I am a highly motivated towards an efficient, transparent and minimal government structure with the least possible invasion and maximum privacy, while maintaining sufficient oversight and civil order. The ethos, by and large, is to let people be - as long as no harm is done to other people or their property. Government's do not need to interfere with citizens nor create as much red tape and difficulties as they do in many countries around world. The Government shall introduce a number of departments for the development of the nation, as detailed here.
Q. Where is Nooqland?
A. Until a physical territory is procured, this website and the embassy in the United Kingdom constitute the official territories of Nooqland.
Q. How are you going to start Nooqland?
A. There are lots of aspects to consider, including but not limited to, the financial investment, the territory, citizens, settlement, security, infrastructure, Government and legislation, to name just a few. Addressing each of these main topics in turn; (1) Financial investment - I (the Prince) have made significant financial investment thus far, with more planned, as well as a lot of time and effort. Key investors, donations, crowdfunding and citizenship application fees will be the main source of funds to establish the nation. In future, minimal citizen and business taxation revenues shall be collected, as well as a voluntary taxation system, to aid further establishment and development. (2) The territory – this is perhaps our biggest challenge but remain positive that an arrangement can be made to secure a ‘nooq’-land, whether it be an island or mainland area. (3) Citizens – applications are open. We believe Nooqland has, and will have, a lot to offer people from all walks of life and from all around the world. (4) Settlement – Logistical plans are well underway for various scenarios. Off grid settlement will be possible almost as soon as the territory is procured via self contained living pods like EcoCapsules. (5) Security – With privacy and security among the core of Nooqland’s founding principles, this is not a matter we take lightly. Security shall be handled in a number of ways, including hiring Private Military Companies, establishing a police force and non-invasive national security measures, and possibly implementing a system similar to Andorra, whereby in certain extreme instances males over the age of 21 are required to defend the nation. (6) Infrastructure – Investment into infrastructure will be one of the first areas of concentration and significant financial investment to develop the nation and make it practically habitable, well connected for business and trade, sustainable, desirable and safe. (7) Government and legislation – First draft sovereign and legal documents are in place and published in this website. The Government structure has been established and some roles have been filled, while others remain available to suitable and motivated individuals.
Q. Can I live in Nooqland?
A. Currently it is not possible to live in Nooqland until a suitable territory is secured. We estimate the first practical settlement will be possible around 2025. Off-grid settlement may be possible before infrastructure is in situ. Nooqland’s Ministry of the Interior is happy to assist with any questions or issues relating to settlement.
Q. Can I get involved in starting the Nooqland?
A. Sure. A new nation needs you write a of people with different skill sets. We would love to hear from anyone who is interested in getting involved in establishing Nooqland. We are looking to fill a number of government jobs. Regrettably, all positions are unpaid at present, but we are rewarding efforts with citizenship, diplomatic status, and a passport. Find out more here.
Q. How many public holidays will there be?!
A. That's yet to be decided, and the decision will be made at a later date. There will probably be around 25 days of public holidays per year.
